Bleeding oesophageal varices represent the final stage of protracted liver damage. In many Western countries this damage is largely caused by alcohol abuse. In other parts of the world, the causes are contracted hepatitis C or hepatitis B. There is an increasing incidence of liver disorders worldwide and a continued need for treatment.

GLYPRESSIN (terlipressin), is used primarily to treat patients suffering from bleeding oesophageal varices. In these acute situations, the varices rupture as a result of severe liver cirrhosis. If the heavy bleeding is not stopped the consequence could be fatal.

GLYPRESSIN successfully achieves haemostasis and is the only medical treatment demonstrated to improve survival rates of patients with this condition. For many physicians, it is the treatment of choice for this life-threatening condition.
